Always hand cut! Photo montage came into being during the First World War. Artists such as Georg Gros and Otto Dix would use found images in magazines and books, creating surrealistic postcards to send back home from the trenches, the sole way they were able to depict the horrifying reality of war whilst bypassing the censors.
I’m fascinated by being able to render the familiar into the unfamiliar, clothing catalogues and holiday brochures become bizarre landscapes populated by melancholy characters lost in contemplating the horizon.
